An Introduction to Vieques National Wildlife Refuge

Vieques, Puerto Rico

The CEO of Darkstore in New York City, Lee Hnetinka works with a variety of partners to offer same-day delivery fulfillment for e-commerce brands. Alongside his career, Lee Hnetinka enjoys discovering places to visit before they become major tourist sites, such as Vieques, Puerto Rico.

Although many people go to Vieques to vacation on white-sand beaches such as Playa Esperanza and Playa Caracas, the island also offers a lesser-known nature reserve. With a variety of flora and fauna on 18,000 acres, the Vieques National Wildlife Refuge offers many reasons to visit.

Occupying lands formerly belonging to the US Military, the Vieques National Wildlife Refuge operates under the management of the US Fish and Wildlife Service and has earned its place as one of the nation’s best wildlife refuges. The refuge offers visitors the opportunity to see more than 190 migratory and resident bird species and 22 amphibian and reptile species. The ocean waters around the refuge serve as home to octopi, mangrove oysters, Caribbean spiny lobsters, and ghost crabs.
